On the last Wednesday (or so) of every month, Head Baker orribu gathers a handful of comic artists and enthusiasts to hyperfocus on and celebrate a webcomic with a live read, polls, art, and a casual little conversation. Each event is split in to four parts, and by the end of the night, artists and readers alike are invigorated and motivated to share their love and their visions with the world!
Meet the guest baker, the main cast of the webcomic, and read along with the head baker.
Dive in!
Read the next couple of chapters/episodes and talk about it! You'll get a good taste of what's to come, and if the guest baker is just starting out, this is a good opportunity to catch the series early on and cheer the guest baker on! Sounds Yummy!
Time for the head baker to start making some treats! Orribu opens a poll for the other cafe patrons to vote for their favorite character! Then a poll opens for the patrons to vote for a gemstone they associate with the most popular character. Finally, the head baker spins a wheel--will the character stand for freedom, or unity?
And just like that, we've planned the crossover fanart!
The head baker and the cafe patrons offer some warm parting words, encouraging the guest baker to keep up the fantastic work! Orribu encourages the patrons to keep an eye on the webcomic she featured, and sends a goodie bag to the guest baker as thanks for being part of the experience!
A lot of us webcomic artists are the character designers, layout designers, costume designers, inkers, colorists, marketers, visual effect designers, editors, narrative designers--you get the point. That's a lot of hats for one person to wear! Head Baker orribu is one of those artists, and she realized that the internet is a vast space and webcomic artists often feel as though they're shouting into the void. So she thought:
There are Discord servers and Twitch communities dedicated to fandoms and IPs, right? There are tons of silent admirers who look at these comics and enjoy them. But we're so focused on the numbers, we don't see those sweeties who adore our work. Heck, some of them even comment on our stuff and we don't see it! What if,
she gurgled,
What if I can use my platform (Twitch) and my ability to hyperfocus on people's art and stories to talk with my handful of viewers about the artist's work? What if I can encourage conversations between artists and readers that aren't toxic?
And so she set off on a journey to create an event called "webcomic Wednesdays," where she would share webcomics she found interesting and fun with the world. Or, you know, that handful of people. Some introspection later, orribu realized that she needed to make some changes to make the show more appealing and fun. She considered the work that everyone was putting out as "treats," and, having a more emotional connection to food, she settled on a bakery theme. Specifically, a pastry bakery.
My mission is to change the narrative of comic appreciation and encourage wholesome, fulfilling interactions within the webcomic community for artists and readers alike. I want to inspire conversations that build morale in a competitive field where artists often feel underappreciated for their hard work and efforts (worsened only by metrics and algorithms). I want to offer more than "you can do it!" to my peers and motivate even the quietest admirer to come forward and show their appreciation. I want anyone who feels downtrodden or too timid to start working on their art to see these events and take a chance. I want them to push their genuine vision into the world and not try and fit into a box. There are so many beautiful stories and ideas that get smothered because of arbitrary restrictions, which hinders growth. It staggers art as a conversation. I want to change that.
Nope! Be it a "webtoon" or a traditional webcomic with a "page" layout, I welcome all submissions. I just ask that whatever site you use be easy to work with to ensure everyone has an awesome, memorable experience.
I'm still figuring this part out, but I plan to pick artists at random from a pool, with more chances for those who do certain things like spread news about the show and my other projects. I will of course sometimes pick someone based on other qualifiers, i.e. someone who I've observed as being very supportive and kind within the community!
I loved my time in the bakery! Orribu and Britt were sweet, enthusiastic, and insightful about my very personal webcomic. We also had a ton of fun as I was on stream with them, chatting and joking along about my characters and world.
It was a ridiculous amount of fun! When Ori contacted me, I was really excited and honoured to participate. She organized and set everything up perfectly. She was a pro at introducing my characters, the story itself, and engaging with me during the stream as she read aloud the first three episodes and then drew fanart. She really made me feel like a celebrity! With her creativity with the show and her big heart, it was honestly a huge confidence boost for me and made me want to work harder for her and others who genuinely enjoy my OCs and my comic.
Orribu is the best! I was so honored when asked if my comic could be featured. The whole bakery aesthetic is wonderfully done, and fits so well since she's so sweet. The feedback from chat, and hearing someone's reactions as they live read is truly amazing. Thanks to Orribu I received 4 new subscribers and had 20 new sets of eyes experiencing my comic. Then the fanart at the end, was just gorgeous, absolutely love it. It was quite literally the cherry on top.
When you support the show, your name will appear in the show credits! Physical merchandise can be purchased from orribu's store!

Olive or "orribu" is a fruity cat lady who's dreamed of being an artist since she was like 2. She enjoys sharing her stories with the world and collaborating with other artists. She (very excitedly) creates crossover possibilities in her head, as she believes we're all connected in ways beyond our comprehension. That, or she just needs an excuse to share sunshine and good vibes with some sweet spice!
